FAQ
WHAT ARE CYANOTYPES?
Discovered in the late 1800’s by Sir John Herschel - this process is considered the first form of photography! The Cyanotype process involves two light sensitive chemical solutions - each is precisely measured and brushed onto a porous material in a darkroom. Once dried, an object or digital negative is placed securely on the treated paper and placed in the sun for developing image. Appropriate shadow density is achieved by the duration and intensity of the sun as an image develops. Development stop by submerging the paper in water. Areas that have been exposed to light turn blue, while unexposed area wash clear. Vibrant Prussian blues characterized of this process are revealed during the drying phase. This unique photographic print process is also known as a sunprint, blueprint or photogram.

Q: Can I commission a Cyanotype with you?
A: If you have a certain style, colors, or inspiration in mind, Carena is happy to accept commissions for yourself or loved ones. Please reach out and include the size, colors, and special requests you want included in your cyanotype.
Q: The cyanotype I'm interested in isn't framed, but I would like to have it framed. Is that possible?
A: At this time, Carena is not offering custom framing. However, she does recommend working with your local frame shop to ensure that your painting is professionally framed to your liking.
Q: How do I care for my original cyanotype?
A: Keep all cyanotype originals out of direct sunlight and cover when not framed/hung. They should be handled with care to avoid any hand oil contamination, fading, scratching, buffing, or chipping. Handle and transport the cyanotype with care. Do not lean anything against the front of the cyanotype or use any sharp objects to clean the surface. Review the full fine art care instructions here.
Q: How do I care for my print?
A: The best way to keep your print in good condition is to frame it. Because all prints are standard sizes, they should be able to fit in most frames you can find at a local retail store like Target or IKEA. However, working with a local frame shop is the best way to ensure your print is framed to your liking.
Q: I love your prints, but I'm interested in a custom size. Can you have one printed for me?
A: Yes, please contact us with the size you are interested in and we will send you a quote.
