The stonebreaker plant is native to tropical Asia, and has been introduced to tropical regions around the world. It has a long history of use in traditional medicine around the world, symbolizing many blessings. In fact, part of it’s widespread distribution is due to its deliberate introduction as a medicinal species. Extracts have been used to treat ailments, from kidney stones, ulcers to liver problems, and cancer with further studies underway for potential pharmacological uses.

Biologists have also been investigating its feature of spreading out its leaves during the day and folding them up at night. This cyclic pattern of “sleep” movements is an example of a phenomenon called nyctinasty, found in certain other plants, including many legumes.
